Sibusiso Nigel Gumede, who chairs the Human Settlement and Infrastructure committee and is a member of Exco, said it was good to be back in his former position to continue where he left off, but admitted it would not be an easy journey.
In his previous term as a councillor, Gumede chaired the Housing Committee, now called the Human Settlement Committee. “I have an in-depth knowledge of the issues involved and experience of the committee. But a lot needs to be done to satisfy our residents, because houses are in huge demand,” Gumede said. “The committee's new name reflects its new, wider focus. We will now be able to provide our citizens with a full package - a house, water and electricity.”
One of Gumede's goals is to strengthen the relationship between councillors and municipal officials, and between local government and provincial government to ensure a good service delivery. “If we want our people to have faith in us, we must ensure we will deliver what is possible and not just make promises for the sake of promises. We want to promise what we are capable of achieving. Good relationships between councillors and communities is vital.”
